Introduction
The Banyak Islands are located off the west coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia, approximately 18 miles (29 kilometers) from mainland Sumatra. This remote island chain is made up of dozens of tropical islands, with a handful of small villages scattered throughout the region.
For surfers, the Banyak Islands are known for their warm water, uncrowded lineups, and a variety of high-quality waves that can accommodate a wide range of skill levels. While the Mentawai Islands often receive most of the attention, many surfers consider the Banyak Islands a friendlier and less crowded alternative.
One of the most common questions surfers ask before planning a trip is: "When is the best time to surf the Banyak Islands?" In this guide, we'll break down the surf season month by month, including swell patterns, wind conditions, crowd levels, and the best times of year for different types of surfers.
When Is the Best Time to Surf the Banyak Islands?
For most surfers, the best time to surf the Banyak Islands is from May through September. During these months, consistent Indian Ocean swells combine with favorable winds to create the best surfing conditions of the year. Advanced surfers often prefer June through August for larger swells and more powerful waves, while intermediate surfers may enjoy May, September, and October when conditions are generally more forgiving.
Surfing the Banyak Islands Month by Month
January & February
January and February are typically the quietest months of the year in the Banyak Islands, both in terms of surf tourism and overall visitor numbers. It's not uncommon to find yourself surfing completely empty lineups, with hardly any other surfers in the entire region.
While the surf isn't as consistent this time of year, medium-sized swells still arrive from time to time. When these swells coincide with favorable winds, surfers can score quality waves without the crowds often found in Indonesia's more popular surf destinations.
The smaller average wave size during this period can also make it an excellent time for surfers who are comfortable in the ocean but have limited experience surfing reef breaks. With generally more forgiving conditions than the peak season, these months can provide a great opportunity to build confidence before tackling the larger swells that arrive later in the year.
March & April
March and April can be an incredible time to visit the Banyak Islands. During these months, swell consistency begins to increase, yet surfers can still often find themselves surfing completely alone or sharing waves with only a handful of other people.
The weather is typically favorable this time of year, with many days offering light and variable winds. As the dry season approaches, conditions become increasingly reliable, making it a great time to score quality surf throughout the region.
This time of year also increases the chances of scoring an early-season swell. While not as consistently large as the peak months of June through August, these early swells can produce excellent surf with far fewer crowds. For many surfers, this period offers the perfect balance of wave quality, favorable weather, and uncrowded lineups.
We have had countless world-class sessions in the Bay of Plenty and at Treasure Island during March and April. While epic surf is never guaranteed, these shoulder-season months often provide some of the best opportunities of the year to score quality waves without the crowds that arrive later in the season.

May
May is one of our favorite months in the Banyak Islands. By this time of year, the Indian Ocean begins to wake up, bringing a noticeable increase in swell consistency and the possibility of larger groundswells. It can be an excellent month to score powerful surf before the peak season arrives.
With improving conditions, crowds do begin to increase, but the region remains noticeably less crowded than the peak months of June, July, and August. Surfers who visit in May often enjoy a great balance between quality waves and manageable crowd levels.
The weather is typically favorable, with light easterly winds in the mornings and variable conditions throughout much of the day. Occasional light westerly winds can develop in the afternoons, which can create excellent conditions at waves such as Treasure Island.
May has produced some of our most memorable surf sessions over the years. For surfers looking for a combination of consistent swell, good weather, and fewer crowds than peak season, it is one of the best months to visit the Banyak Islands.

June - September
June through September are the peak months for surf consistency in the Banyak Islands. During this period, the Indian Ocean regularly produces powerful groundswells, offering surfers the best chance of scoring quality waves throughout the region.
With increased swell consistency comes an increase in visitors. While the Banyak Islands remain significantly less crowded than many of Indonesia's more famous surf destinations, this is the busiest time of year. A number of charter boats visit the region during these months, along with guests staying at the various surf camps and resorts scattered throughout the islands.
Despite the increase in surfers, crowded conditions are still relatively rare by Indonesian standards. Empty sessions remain possible, especially at less popular waves, and many lineups are far less crowded than those found in places such as the Mentawai Islands, Nias, or Bali.
The weather is generally favorable, with glassy mornings being common throughout the season. Stronger westerly winds often develop in the afternoons, which can create excellent conditions at waves such as Treasure Island. Combined with the region's consistent swell, these winds can produce some truly world-class surf.
For surfers whose primary goal is maximizing their chances of scoring quality waves, June through September represent the heart of the surf season in the Banyak Islands and offer the highest probability of scoring excellent surf during a trip.

October
October still offers fairly consistent surf in the Banyak Islands, although swell consistency begins to taper off compared to the peak months of June through September. Even so, quality waves are still common, and surfers can often score excellent conditions throughout the region.
One of the biggest advantages of October is the decrease in crowds. By this time of year, many surfers have shifted their attention to other destinations around the world that are entering their prime seasons. As a result, the Banyak Islands often become noticeably quieter, creating more opportunities to enjoy uncrowded surf.
The weather can be slightly more unpredictable than during the peak season, with periods of variable winds and occasional weather systems moving through the region. However, when the conditions come together, October can produce truly epic surf with only a handful of other surfers in the water.
For surfers seeking a combination of good waves, lighter crowds, and a more relaxed atmosphere, October remains one of the most underrated months to visit the Banyak Islands.
November & December
November and December are similar to January and February and are generally considered part of the low season in the Banyak Islands. Swell consistency decreases during this period, although medium-sized swells can still arrive from time to time and provide fun surf throughout the region.
This time of year is typically wetter than the peak surf season, with a greater chance of rain and unsettled weather. However, the tradeoff is a significant decrease in surfers. It's not uncommon to find yourself surfing with only a handful of other people in the region—or nobody at all.
While conditions can be less predictable, surfers who are flexible and willing to take a chance may be rewarded with uncrowded waves and memorable sessions. If your goal is to escape the crowds and experience the Banyak Islands at their quietest, November and December can be surprisingly rewarding months to visit.

Water Temperature
One of the best things about surfing in the Banyak Islands is the warm water. Water temperatures remain comfortable year-round, typically ranging between 28°C and 30°C (82–86°F), with very little seasonal variation.
Unlike many surf destinations around the world, wetsuits are unnecessary in the Banyak Islands. Most surfers are comfortable in boardshorts, bikinis, rash guards, or lightweight surf tops throughout the year.
The warm tropical water makes it easy to spend long hours in the ocean, whether you're surfing, snorkeling, fishing, or simply enjoying the islands. Even during the coolest months of the year, the water remains pleasantly warm by international surfing standards.
Crowds
One of the biggest reasons surfers choose the Banyak Islands over other Indonesian surf destinations is the relatively low number of surfers in the water. While crowds have increased over the years, the region remains significantly less crowded than places such as the Mentawai Islands, Nias, Bali, and many other well-known surf destinations throughout Indonesia.
From November through February, crowds are often virtually non-existent. During this time, it's common to surf with only your friends, a handful of other surfers, or sometimes nobody at all.
March and April remain relatively quiet, although the number of visiting surfers begins to increase slightly as the surf season approaches. Even so, uncrowded sessions are still the norm rather than the exception.
May marks the beginning of a noticeable increase in visitors as swell consistency improves. Despite this, the region still feels uncrowded compared to most Indonesian surf destinations.
June through September are the busiest months of the year. Charter boats, surf camps, and resorts throughout the region are operating at their highest capacity. However, even during peak season, surfers can still find uncrowded waves, empty sessions, and lineups with only a handful of other surfers. By Indonesian standards, the Banyak Islands remain remarkably uncrowded.
It's worth noting that there is a lot of misinformation online regarding crowds in the Banyak Islands. Over the years, we have seen forum posts and comments claiming that lineups such as Gunturs or Treasure Island regularly have 40, 50, or even more surfers in the water. After surfing this region for more than 16 years, that has simply not been our experience.
Just recently, we surfed Treasure Island during a solid swell with two charter boats in the area, a private yacht, two sailboats, and guests from multiple surf camps making the journey over. Despite all of that activity, there were only seven surfers in the water when we paddled out.
The same applies to the Bay of Plenty. During peak season, there may be around 40 surfers staying between the various surf camps and resorts in the area. However, those surfers are spread across multiple waves, different surf schedules, and many hours of daylight. In all our years surfing here, it is extremely rare to see more than 20 people in a lineup, even during the busiest periods of the year.
One of the reasons crowds remain manageable is that the Banyak Islands offer numerous surf breaks that become active under different swell, wind, and tide conditions. As swell size increases, more waves begin to work, spreading surfers across the region rather than concentrating everyone in one location. Ironically, some of the best swells of the year can also produce some of the least crowded sessions. When conditions are small, fewer waves are working, which naturally concentrates surfers into fewer lineups. As the swell builds, more options open up throughout the region and the crowds tend to spread out.
By October, visitor numbers begin to decrease again as many surfers shift their attention to other destinations around the world. Crowds thin out, while quality surf remains possible, making October one of the most underrated months of the year for surfers seeking a balance between good waves and quiet lineups.
For surfers whose primary goal is avoiding crowds, the Banyak Islands remain one of Indonesia's best options. Regardless of when you visit, there is always the possibility of finding yourself surfing quality waves with far fewer people than you would encounter in many of Indonesia's more famous surf regions.

Final Thoughts
The best time to surf the Banyak Islands ultimately depends on what you're looking for. If your goal is maximum consistency, June through September are generally the best months to visit. If you value uncrowded waves and a quieter atmosphere, the shoulder and low-season months can be incredibly rewarding.
The Banyak Islands surf season offers something for every type of surfer. From empty low-season lineups and playful shoulder-season swells to the powerful groundswells of peak season, there are quality waves available throughout much of the year.
No matter when you visit, the Banyak Islands offer warm water, a variety of quality waves, and crowd levels that remain lower than many of Indonesia's more famous surf destinations. For surfers willing to explore, there is always the possibility of finding memorable waves and unforgettable sessions throughout the year.
